The most popular archeological site in the Eastern Rhodopi Mountains is Perperikon. It represents a huge cult complex, a Thracian sanctuary. One can reach this site through a road carved into the stones- 90 meters long, 4 m. wide and 6-8 m. high. The range of the town Perperikon is about 20000 square meters. There are hundreds of tombs, stairs, altars, pylons, streets, water tanks and other signs and artifacts carved into the stones that can be seen very well preserved even today. Most of them remain mystery even today. When you clime to the top and look the entire masterpiece one can not hold his admiration to the precise and astonishing work of the ancient craftsmen that built this place centuries ago. According to the latest study, the life in this area dates some 7 000 years ago. It is the very place of Perperikon that made it a center of the antiquity and this is why there had been a strong fortress which remains, even though not very well preserved today. Only the parts of the wall that had circled the whole peak and one 15 m high defense tower had survived the time competition.
